Cornets

The cornet is not a trumpet. It has a conical bore -- the tubing gradually widens from mouthpiece to bell -- which gives it a warmer, rounder, more mellow tone than the brighter, more projecting sound of the trumpet. If your director specified a cornet, a trumpet is not a substitute.

Cornets are a staple of British brass bands, traditional jazz, and Dixieland ensembles, and are used in some beginning band programs where the more compact shape makes the instrument easier for younger students to hold and play.
